Tour of Bright

This year we were the nutrition sponsor of Tour of Bright and the event sold out in days. We decided to take some of our young riders to mix it up with some of our more experienced NRS riders for the experience. Jack and a number of the other boys were changing bikes from their MTB to Rd but we would try to have as much fun in the process as a team with the usual banter going around.
Tour of Bright is made up of three stages - a long stage on day one for the elite riders which goes from Bright along the Ovens Valley, over Rosewhite Gap, up to Bogong village then back to the top of Tawonga Gap, followed by a TT in the afternoon. The second day is a long climb from Bright to the top of Mt Hotham.

Day one we had Jack and Tarmac right up there with the rest close behind in little splinter groups. Jack looked strong coming through feed despite being on the front (using more energy than he needed) with a select group of 15-20 riders. Unfortunately due to all his extra work on the front he hunger flatted half way up. He still finished super strong but lost a bit of time to the leaders but he knew his form was there.
The rest of the team got up the hill safe and sound in splinter groups and did really well so we quickly hit the recovery drinks and headed home to our Oasis at Riverbend (a farm house on 150 acres) just outside Bright for more food, hot showers and a bit of down time in prep for the TT in the afternoon.

The TT is never easy but Jack and Tarmac continued their great form and went really well along with the rest of the team. Jack came in first to highlight his morning frustration and moved up on GC with his new Cube TT bike. He won the stage by 18 seconds on a bike he set up the day before in the farm driveway (quite funny really all considering) and a set of Enve carbon wheels that our great long time sponsors at Monza loaned him.

Day two and the final day, Bright to Mt Hotham, and the race was on straight away with a few breaks trying to get up the road. It was all kept under control with Tarmac doing a fair bit of chasing in his final race for TORQ to protect Jack as much as he could. I managed to get my car around the bunch to the feed station on Hotham and Jack was in the select group with Tarmac just off the bunch after doing a fair bit of work. I stayed at feed and encouraged the rest of the team as they went past and hit them with more energy drink and caffeine Gels to get them home.
I slowly weaved my way up the last 12km of the hill past all the other riders, I didn’t quite make it to the finish line in time but could see a loan orange figure in the lead up the last section of the climb and had people shouting at me telling me one of our riders was away. Jack had finished his weekend in style and took out the win beating a top quality field. The whole team was wrapped for him in what really is a well deserved win and testament to some great dedication and training.
The rest of the team had a blast in what was a wicked location at riverbend. We will be back for a training camp there very soon.

Thanks as always to all our sponsors who without their continued support the team and support of junior riders wouldn’t be possible.
