I started Triathlon at the age of 13. Before that I had done a lot of swimming, surf lifesaving, BMX and athletics so I thought why not give triathlon a go. The combination of having three disciplines made it enjoyable to train for and meant I could use my all round ability in all three to get good results.
I will always remember my first triathlon which was done at Safety Beach. I did the swim in a surfing wetsuit (steamer) which took me about 2 minutes to get off in transition, then I rode the 8km undulating course on my BMX, having no gears made the steep up and down hills quite difficult. I had no problems on the run except for burning quads from standing up the whole ride.
Until the end of year 12 Triathlon was something I just did for fun and never took that seriously, but after finishing school I started to become a lot more dedicated. After my first serious season of racing I was awarded a scholarship into the VIS (Victorian Institute of Sport) program, which I am still a part of.
The reason I enjoy being a Triathlete is I enjoy pushing my body and seeing the improvements of hard training in my race results. Also getting to travel to so many different places, train in so many different environments and getting to meet so many different people.
